You click once. Windows registers two clicks. You drag a file and it drops halfway. You click a link and it opens twice.
This has one of two causes, and they need completely different fixes. Ninety percent of the time it’s a worn-out switch inside the mouse: a hardware fault you can repair yourself. The rest of the time it’s a setting or driver.
Here’s how to tell which one you have before you start.
The 30-second test that tells you everything
Plug the mouse into a different computer, or plug a different mouse into yours.
- Problem follows the mouse → hardware. The switch is worn. Go to the hardware fixes.
- Problem stays on the PC with a different mouse → software. Go to the software fixes.
No second computer? Use this instead. Open Notepad, hold the mouse still on the desk, and click once, slowly, twenty times. Count how many times the cursor selects or deselects. If a stationary mouse on a hard surface still double-fires, it’s the switch, movement and surface aren’t involved.
The real cause: a worn micro-switch
Inside your mouse, under the left button, is a tiny mechanical switch, usually an Omron D2FC-F-7N. It has a thin metal leaf inside that flexes every time you click. After a few million clicks that leaf loses its springiness and starts to bounce instead of making one clean contact. The mouse sends two signals because, electrically, two clicks really did happen.
This is why the problem gets worse over time and never fixes itself, and why no driver update will help.
Most mice are rated for 10–20 million clicks. Gamers hit that in two or three years.
Option A: debounce software (free, works today)
Debounce software ignores a second click that arrives too fast to be human. It’s a workaround, not a repair, but it’s free and takes two minutes.
For a general-purpose mouse, ClickFix or MouseFix both work. Set the debounce threshold to around 50ms and raise it in 10ms steps until the double-clicks stop. Go too high and deliberate double-clicks stop registering, so use the lowest value that works.
If you have a gaming mouse, check its own software first — many now include this built in:
- Razer Synapse, no built-in debounce, but you can lower the polling rate as a partial workaround
- Logitech G HUB, no debounce setting; use third-party software
- SteelSeries GG, no debounce setting
- Corsair iCUE — has a Debounce slider under Mouse settings
- Glorious CORE — has Debounce Time, adjustable in ms
Corsair and Glorious owners should start there, it’s the cleanest fix available.
Option B: bend the switch contact back (free, 20 minutes)
This is a genuine repair and it works surprisingly well. You need a small Phillips screwdriver and a bit of patience.
- Unplug the mouse or remove the battery
- Peel back the PTFE feet on the bottom: the screws hide underneath. Use a fingernail or plastic pick, not metal, so the feet stay reusable
- Remove the screws and separate the shell. Go slowly; there’s usually a ribbon cable to the top half
- Find the switch under the left button: a small white or grey box with a coloured button, marked Omron or Huano
- Use a flat tool to prise open the four tabs on the switch housing. The white cap lifts off. Work over a container — there’s a small metal leaf and a tiny spring inside that will vanish into your carpet
- Take out the curved metal leaf. Using tweezers, increase its curve very slightly: a fraction of a millimetre is enough
- Reassemble in reverse order
If you’re not comfortable with step 5, skip to Option C.
Option C: replace the switch (~$3, needs soldering)
The permanent fix. Buy a pack of Omron D2FC-F-7N switches (the “20M” version lasts longest) or Kailh GM 8.0 for a lighter click. Desolder the old switch, solder the new one in. Any beginner soldering iron handles this: the pads are large and forgiving.
Option D: swap the buttons in software
If your right button is fine and you mostly need the left one working, remap them and hold the mouse the other way round. Not elegant, but it buys you time until a replacement arrives.
Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Mouse → Mouse button → change the primary button to Right.
Software fixes
If the test at the top pointed at your PC rather than the mouse, work through these.
Adjust the double-click speed
If Windows is set to a very slow double-click speed, it interprets two ordinary separate clicks as one double-click.
- Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Mouse
- Click Additional mouse settings
- On the Buttons tab, drag Double-click speed toward Fast
- Test on the folder icon beside the slider
Moving it toward Fast means Windows needs the two clicks closer together to count them as a double-click, which stops accidental doubles.
Reinstall the mouse driver
Win + X→ Device Manager- Expand Mice and other pointing devices
- Right-click your mouse → Uninstall device
- Restart — Windows reinstalls it automatically
If you have gaming-mouse software installed, uninstall that too and test with the plain Windows driver. Bad profiles and macro settings in Synapse, G HUB and iCUE cause phantom clicks more often than people expect.
Change the USB port and cable
Move the receiver or cable to a different port, straight into the PC rather than through a hub or monitor. Wireless receivers in particular hate USB 3.0 ports: the 2.4GHz interference is a documented problem. Use a USB 2.0 port, or a short extension cable to get the receiver away from the back of the case.
For wireless mice, weak batteries cause dropped and repeated signals long before Windows shows a low-battery warning. Put fresh batteries in before assuming the switch is dead.
Turn off USB selective suspend
Windows powers down USB ports to save energy, and waking them can produce a stray click.
- Control Panel → Power Options
- Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings
- Expand USB settings → USB selective suspend setting
- Set to Disabled
- Apply
On laptops, also open Device Manager → right-click each USB Root Hub → Properties → Power Management → untick Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
Rule out ClickLock and accessibility settings
In Additional mouse settings → Buttons, make sure Turn on ClickLock is unticked. It’s designed to hold a drag after a click and produces exactly this kind of odd behaviour.
Also check Settings → Accessibility → Mouse and confirm Mouse Keys is off.

Common questions
How long should a mouse last before this happens? Most switches are rated for 10–20 million clicks. Office use gets five years or more. Heavy gaming can wear one out in two.
Is debounce software safe? Yes. It sits between the driver and Windows and ignores clicks that arrive faster than a human can produce. It doesn’t modify hardware or firmware. The one downside is that a high debounce value can start swallowing genuine fast double-clicks.
Is it worth repairing a cheap mouse? If it’s under $25, buy a new one: the switch costs $3 and takes an hour if you’ve never soldered. On a $100+ gaming mouse the repair is very much worth it, and Option B (bending the leaf) costs nothing at all.
Will a firmware update fix it? No. Firmware can’t compensate for a switch that’s physically bouncing. Some mice added a debounce setting in software, which masks it, but the switch keeps degrading.
My mouse double-clicks only in one program. Then it isn’t the mouse. Check that program’s own input settings — many games and design apps have their own click-speed and macro handling.
Before you order a new mouse: try the debounce fix first. It takes two minutes and will tell you for certain whether you’re dealing with a worn switch. If it stops the problem completely, you’ve confirmed the diagnosis and bought yourself months while you decide whether to repair or replace.
